Once I learned that magic was here, I learned it was everywhere, like the nuns had said God was, but with magic, I didn’t need faith because I could see it. I went to a psychic and asked him about the future. He told me I didn’t need him: I had my own abilities I was hardly using. To practice, he said, I should begin letting my intuition drive my walks and tell me which way to turn. He was wrong about my future but right about my walks: they turned up sidewalk crystal salesmen (two of them, in different spots at different times), people I was thinking about moments before they appeared, this fallen tarot card.
Cards: eventually, I made my own deck, not for divining, but for an intuitive process of finding my way out of my book. One card for each day something had happened; one card for each relevant quote from Jung, magicians, and Twin Peaks.
“All that we see in this world is based on someone's ideas. Some ideas are destructive, some are constructive. Some ideas can arrive in the form of a dream. I can say it again: Some ideas arrive in the form of a dream.” (The Log Lady)
